Ferrell and McKay obviously love their movie, and they hilariously gush about what went into making such a weird flick.

The commentary by Will Ferrell and director Adam McKay (along with a series of guests such as Andy Richter, who has nothing to do with the movie) is surprisingly mixed. In fact, while the unrated disc is plastered with warnings and labels, it's really just an equally funny R-rated version to the original's PG-13. This isn't Return of the King: Extended Edition, folks. Most of it is just longer jokes and a lot more swearing. There are about seven extra minutes of footage.

I mention this here rather than in the movie section because the two versions are barely any different. Score: 8 out of 10 Packaging and Extras Anchorman comes in two versions, rated and unrated. Like the subtitled commentaries, I'm impressed with an effort I can't imagine other studios making on a comedy like this. Sounds move from speaker to speaker with clarity. But in scenes such as the rival station gang war and places where noise is coming from a specific part of the screen, the surround is actually impressive. Seeing as this is a comedy that mainly uses two or three characters bouncing dialogue off each other, you'll find a pretty front-loaded DVD here. It's simply a nice gesture that DreamWorks went the extra mile for its hearing-impaired audience. And in a move that I greatly appreciate, the commentary itself is also subtitled (even in the foreign languages). Subtitles are also available in English, French and Spanish. Score: 7 out of 10 Languages and Audio Anchorman is available in English and French Dolby Digital 5.1 and English 2.0. Colors are also a bit darker than they should be compared to what audiences saw in theaters. This tends to cause a little diffusion of fine detail and a little haloing around the edges of the actors. In a lot of the movie's scenes with characters on solid-color backgrounds wearing solid-color clothes there is some noticeable softness. While it isn't terrible, the transfer isn't anything to write home about. The Video The movie's presented in 1.85:1. It looks like the director gave the cast a few pointers and just told them to have fun. An ever-escalating gang-fight between rival stations (featuring some hilarious cameos I won't spoil here) especially takes the cake.

Oddly enough, the main story about the feud between the two anchors isn't nearly as funny as all the subplots where the comedians are free to do their business. Burgundy mocks Corningstone's femininity and Corningstone ceaselessly exploits the fact that Burgundy is an idiot.

Corningstone, feeling her professional integrity is tarnished by the affair, dumps him and the two begin a vicious feud. And things only go from bad to worse when Burgundy beds Corningstone and shouts his love to the public. A mixture of macho-pride and attraction to her makes them feel threatened by the talented journalist. However, the all-male cast doesn't like this change. It appears that the network wants to roll with the times and bring in some diversity. That is, until now.Įnter Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate), the new female anchorperson. Women melt under the amazing glare of Ron Burgundy's fame. With his friends and fellow news stars Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), Brick Tamland (Steve Carell), and Champ Kind (David Koechner), Burgundy spends his off-time drinking and picking up the ladies. Everyone from biker dudes to infants loves him, and when he's on TV, you better shut up. Suave, well-dressed, handsome, smart, and any number of other qualities he'd ascribe to himself, Burgundy is the toast of the town. Ron Burgundy (Ferrell) is San Diego's favorite anchorman. The film is set in the 1970s, when plaid and voluminous hair styles ruled and before political correctness reared its head. And while it's an entertaining comedy, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Ferrell's first real adult-comedy lead, isn't going to change your opinion of him either way. And to be fair, when his humor is off, his routine can border on grating. Since his SNL days, he's played the same confused bloke who acts stupid for laughs. Detractors hate Ferrell because they think he's a one-trick pony without any range. To fans, he's that one friend who always seems to dive into trouble with an idiotic eagerness. And even when he goes over-the-top, it never seems too out of character like it might have with the aforementioned Carey and Sandler. He's doesn't have the cynicism or meanness of other comedy stars. Fans love Ferrell because he acts with such an earnest humor.
